Champ Contrechamp documentary film festival in Lasalle

By our man in New York (and sometimes France) Eric Breitbart whose presentation “Le pouvoir, le cinéma, et le travail” was featured at this year's festival.
The Temple, one of the screening venues at Lasalle.

May is the time when all filmmakers’ thoughts turn to Cannes. Well, not all of them. Champ Contrechamp, a four-day documentary film festival now in its sixth year, takes place around the same time (this year, May 17-20) in Lasalle, a village in the Cevennes about an hour north of Nîmes.

Featuring a mere 20 films, round table discussions and presentations, CC is a rarity these days—a film festival without a market place, V.I.P. lounges or big name stars. Just people who want to see interesting documentaries and talk about them.

Festival director Henri de Latour’s policy of no badges means that when you sit down at the local café for a Pastis you won’t know if the person next to you is a filmmaker, a student from Montpelier, or the local butcher.

Screenings take place in one of two venues in the middle of town just across the street from each other, and everyone generally eats together under a big tent where the plat du jour costs 6 Euros. Each year’s program is organized around a theme—this year it was “Le Pouvoir”, personal, political, financial, and linguistic. Among the films featured were "Stella" by Vanina Vignal, "L.Ville" by Swann Dubus, "La Maison Haute" by Pavel Lounguine and "La langue ne ment pas" by Stan Neumann. Round table discussions included Guy Pineau, Patrick Champagne and Eric Hazan discussing “Images du pouvoir, pouvoir des images”, Michka Saäl talking about the creative process, Hugues Le Paige on the “language” of television news, and Eric Breibart’s presentation “Le pouvoir, le cinéma, et le travail”.
