MA Shumin awarded Metcalf Fellowship

MA Shumin is a Chinese-American filmmaker living in Paris' Belleville district ( read her blog about the area). Recently awarded the Metcalf Fellowship program in Environmental Reporting, we asked her for some thoughts on this great opportunity;

"Since 2005, I have been commissioned to create tourism and commercial videos for the Internet. While it can be fun to make videos of the Eiffel Tower and quaint neighborhoods in Paris, I feel that one of the greatest responsibility and privilege of being a filmmaker is to make others aware of the world today.

Being born in China, raised in New York City and having come to live in Europe, I have become an international citizen. I care about our world and am passionate about making quality films that help other citizens to become more aware of our world today. The environment is an important subject that people urgently need to know about.

In April '07 I applied for the Metcalf Fellowship program in Environmental Reporting and have just been accepted. The Fellowship program runs from September 2007-June 2008, and I will be creating podcast videos on environmental issues for NPR's Science Friday website. As it will be seen on the Internet, I hope the videos I make will reach a worldwide audience.

During the month of September I will be at University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography to do independent study, learn about marine, science and environmental issues. I look forward to the experience of making environmental videos. I think it will be very rewarding, very meaningful work."
