The Select Hotel * Rive Gauche

Pamela Price writing for
I V Y Paris

Running up and down the large spiral staircase in The Select Hotel was a favorite pastime of mine when I was a child. When my father was traveling through Paris we often stayed at The Select. At the time, the hotel was more like a chic hostel than the classy joint it's become.  It's location is quite perfect, nestled in the Place de la Sorbonne, where guests can enjoy the cafes in the square and the chamber sounds from the bell tower above.

When school is in session, it's always the same old spot filled with students from the Université. During the summer musicians often use the square for a performance venue, entertaining the onlookers from the cafes.

The Select was always a cozy home away from home for me, with a fireplace always in action and the rooms with their ski-lodge ceilings. Its newest design is more of a modern one, resembling New York City's Paramount Hotel. Even though the prices have raised, they are still reasonable and you're guaranteed to become a regular customer at the cafe downstairs. When you're too tired from all of the walking, don't worry, Paris is still right outside your window, just a few steps away.
