December in Paris: Pop-Up Holiday Markets, Craft Fairs, Ice Skating & More…

Whether you’re brimming with holiday cheer and eat up the cheesiness that the holidays can bring or looking for hip events that have absolutely nothing to do with Noel, we’ve got you covered, with everything from a graffiti installation in a new art space in an old car garage to ice skating in front of the Hotel de Ville.

La Manufacture 111 recently opened on rue des Pyrenees in the 20th and is playing host to 1984, the well-known Paris graffiti collective, for an ongoing residency. The three-story former car garage will officially open in April 2024, but this pre-opening is on view until December 22.

Trax Magazine, dedicated to all things electronic music, is opening Club Trax, a pop-up club for just three weekends this month. Most of the details of each event have been kept under wraps, but there are two more soirees left, on December 13 and December 20. Keep up with the details here and here.

Parisian photographer Christophe Jacrot is known for focusing on the beauty that can exist in a city when unpleasant weather strikes, often rain and snow. Though this interest began in Paris, it quickly moved to other metropolises like Hong Kong, New York, London.

The Galerie de l’Europe is showing his series New York in Black, photos taken just after Sandy hit New York City last fall and the southern portion of the Manhattan island went fully black, a haunting and humbling depiction of a city that often seems invincible.

After wild success in previous restaurants like Le Buerehiesel in Strasbourg, and Mon Viel Ami and Drouot in Paris, Antoine Westermann has opened La Degustation as an annex to his also-celebrated Coq Rico on Rue Lepic in Montmartre. Head over for an early holiday coupe of champagne and small bites, which you can also purchase at the epicerie to enjoy at home.

Holiday Events

Naturally, Paris around Christmastime has its host of traditional celebratory showings, like markets, ice skating rinks (perhaps the most famous being at Hotel de Ville), and the ferris wheel at Place de la Concorde, which gives a unique sky-high view over the city.

Grand Palais & Hôtel Boeheme

You can find lists of each neighborhood’s offerings here and also be sure to pop over to the Grand Palais for its presentation. One of the most exciting holiday pop-ups has to be the Alpine Chatelet Yves Camdeborde (of Le Comptoir and L’Avant Comptoir wine bar) has set up. It will offer live music as well as cold-weather foodie favorites, like boudin noir, St Marcellin, croquettes, and natural wines.

I personally tend to leave my holiday shopping to the last minute, so pop-up shops like the Hotel Boheme (December 14 – 15) and les Boutiques Voltaire (December 14) are total saviors. It doesn’t hurt that they’ll both offer some sustenance (and a DJ set at the latter), critical during long shopping days.

While there are a slew of wonderfully festive events happening around the city, it can be a difficult task to plan a meal out on the actual holidays. Fear not! Paris by Mouth and The Paris Kitchen have done the leg work for us and provided some recommendations for what is open from December 25 – January 1.
